How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages
Save one page per file or pull selected pages out of a PDF — with Preview, Acrobat, or FileToolsHub split and extract tools.
Splitting a PDF means turning one document into many — usually one file per page, or a few files split at chosen boundaries. You might need only the signed last page, or want to email chapters separately. Mac Preview and Acrobat can do it locally; /tool/split-pdf and /tool/extract-pdf-pages on FileToolsHub cover the same jobs in the browser.
Split vs extract
Split often means break the whole document into single-page PDFs or chunks on fixed ranges. Extract means pull specific page numbers into one new PDF while leaving the rest behind. Pick the tool that matches whether you need every page as its own file or just pages 3–5.
Mac Preview: split by page
Open the PDF, enable thumbnails, select a page, File → Export as PDF for one page, or drag pages to the desktop to create separate files. Tedious for 40 pages but fine for one or two.
Adobe Acrobat
Organize Pages → Split, choose number of pages, file size, or top-level bookmarks. Acrobat shines on large structured documents and batch rules.
FileToolsHub: split entire document
Use /tool/split-pdf to upload a PDF and download a ZIP of per-page PDFs (or the split mode the tool exposes). Good when you do not have Acrobat and the packet is long.
FileToolsHub: extract selected pages
Use /tool/extract-pdf-pages when you know exact pages — enter ranges like 1, 3, 5-7 and download one PDF containing only those pages. Lighter than splitting everything and deleting extras.
Before you split
Rotate crooked scans with /tool/rotate-pdf and delete blanks on /tool/edit-pdf-pages so recipients do not get nonsense single-page files. Note page numbers on screen may differ from printed footer numbers — use thumbnail order.
After you split
Merge subsets back with /tool/merge-pdf, compress with /tool/compress-pdf for email, or protect sensitive extracts with /tool/protect-pdf.
FAQ
Does splitting reduce quality? No — each page keeps the same content as the source; you are copying page objects, not re-scanning.
Can I split password-protected PDFs? You need the open password first; unlock with /tool/unlock-pdf if it is your file.
Which tool for one page only? Extract is faster; split-everything then rename is wasteful.
Will links and bookmarks survive? Complex PDFs may lose outline structure when split; text and images on the page usually remain intact.
