Trim Silence

Remove silence from audio drops quiet samples at the start and the end. The threshold slider opens at 0.01. A quiet gap in the middle stays.

Edges only, at 0.01

The slider is labeled Silence threshold and runs from 0.001 to 0.1 in steps of 0.001. It opens at 0.01. A sample counts as sound when any channel is at least that loud. The scan walks forward to the first loud sample and backward to the last loud sample. Everything before and after is cut. On a ten-sample test at 1,000 samples per second, the kept range starts at sample 2 and ends at sample 7, from 0.002 seconds to 0.007 seconds. A buffer that is loud, then quiet, then loud, keeps the quiet middle. If every sample is under the threshold, the page throws Entire clip is below the silence threshold.

What the cut does not remove

A pause between words stays if it is not at the edge. The threshold does not fade the cut. It is a hard trim. The function also clamps a threshold below 0.0001 up to 0.0001 and a threshold above 0.5 down to 0.5, but the slider itself cannot leave 0.001 to 0.1. The download is WAV, 16-bit PCM. The file name is the original name, without its extension, then -trim-silence-audio.wav, or audio-trim-silence-audio.wav when the name is missing. Download WAV is the button. After a save, the status reads Download started. A press with no file shows Upload an audio file first. A file that is not audio shows Please upload an audio file. Channels and sample rate stay as they were.

How to check the edges

Upload a clip that starts and ends with quiet and has a quiet gap in the middle. Leave the slider at 0.01 and press Download WAV. The new file should be shorter only if the edges were under 0.01. The middle gap should still be there. Raise the threshold toward 0.1 if the edge noise is louder than 0.01 and the start did not move. If the whole clip is under the line, expect Entire clip is below the silence threshold and no file. Press the button before any upload and expect Upload an audio file first. The saved name should end in trim-silence-audio.wav. The status after a real save should say Download started.

The trim runs in this browser. The audio is not uploaded. Download WAV uses the threshold on the slider at that moment. Closing the tab drops the clip. The next visit starts with no audio loaded. The opening threshold is 0.01. The slider stops at 0.001 and 0.1. A quiet middle is kept. An all-quiet clip throws Entire clip is below the silence threshold. The download is WAV. The name ends in trim-silence-audio.wav. A missing file says Upload an audio file first.
