One beep on the default output

Click Play test tone. The page creates an audio context, a sine oscillator at 880 Hz, and a gain of 0.08. The oscillator starts immediately and stops at 0.45 seconds. Gain falls toward silence over about 0.4 seconds so the beep is short rather than a click cut off hard. On success the line reads Played a short beep through the default output device. The context closes shortly after. There is no frequency slider, no left-right switch, no sweep, and no saved file. The microphone is never opened.

If you hear nothing

Failure sets Could not play audio — check that sound is not blocked. A blocked autoplay rule, a muted tab, a muted system, or the wrong output device can all produce silence even when this line says the beep played. The success line means the browser started the oscillator. It does not prove the speakers moved. Check the system output device, the tab mute control, and the hardware mute. Then press the button again. This test does not list audio devices and does not let you pick one. The browser uses the default output.

What the tone is for

880 Hz is a short audible sine in the range most laptop speakers can reproduce. It is not a hearing test and not a frequency-response sweep. It will not tell you that a driver is blown in one channel, because both channels receive the same mono beep if the default device is stereo. Microphone Test watches input level. Webcam Test opens a camera. Keyboard Test lights keys. None of those play this tone. Speech Synthesis speaks text with a voice. That is a different button on a different tool.

What not to expect

There is no WAV download and no loop. Leaving the tab does not keep a tone playing past the stop time. Headphones and speakers are whichever device the operating system has selected. A Bluetooth headset that is connected but not selected will stay quiet. Switch it in the system sound settings, then play the tone again. No audio is uploaded. No recording is stored. The only result is the beep and the status line. Press the button again after you raise the system volume. Wait for the first beep to finish. Each press starts a new tone and closes the audio context again. The page does not remember which device you wanted.
