Turn Phone Photos into a PDF for Portals

Shoot the form, upload the JPGs in page order, download one PDF, then compress it if the portal still rejects it.

Phones replaced desk scanners for a lot of everyday paperwork. Portals still ask for PDF. That’s a conversion job, not a photography problem.

Shoot clean

Good light, flat pages, one page per shot. Upload in reading order to /tool/jpg-to-pdf. Mixed PNG/WebP sets belong on /tool/images-to-pdf.

Fix orientation

If a page lands sideways, /tool/rotate-pdf after conversion is faster than reshooting.

Still too big?

Run /tool/compress-pdf. Keep the original photos if you might need higher quality later.

How to shoot so the PDF is readable

Fill the frame with the page and leave a small margin so the edges are not cut off. Shadows in the gutter of a book make the inside text gray — press the page flat or shoot in two halves only if the portal allows multiple images, then keep them in order. One photo per page is easier to reorder than a single photo of two pages. Wipe the lens. A yellow indoor cast is fine for a receipt and bad for an ID page; move closer to a window. Check focus on the smallest type, not on the table the paper is sitting on. After upload, open the PDF and zoom one line. If you cannot read it, reshoot before you compress. Compression makes a large file smaller; it does not sharpen a blurry photo. Rotate any page that landed sideways, then compress once for the portal limit. Name the PDF after the form, not after the camera file number, so the upload is obvious in your downloads list. If the site rejects the file for size, compress once and reread the small type. If it rejects the file for page size or color, follow the portal’s own instructions. Keep the photos until the upload is accepted.
