How to Remove a Password from a PDF
Unlock a PDF you own so you can edit or re-save it — using Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, or FileToolsHub’s unlock tool in the browser.
A password-protected PDF opens only when you know the password. To edit pages, run OCR, or merge the file into a larger packet, you need an unlocked copy — one you are allowed to modify. If you set the password yourself, removal is straightforward; if someone else locked it, you need their password or permission, not a bypass trick.
When removal is appropriate
You forgot the password on your own contract draft. You locked a file last month and now need to insert a page. Your team uses a shared password stored in a manager and wants a clean master without encryption for internal editing. Those are normal cases.
Do not use unlock tools on documents you are not authorized to open. Passwords exist to control access.
Desktop: Adobe Acrobat
Open the PDF in Acrobat, enter the password, then use File → Properties → Security → change Security Method to No Security, or use Remove Password depending on version. Save a new copy. Keep the locked version archived if compliance requires it.
Desktop: Mac Preview
Open the PDF in Preview, enter the password, File → Export as PDF. The export is often unencrypted if you had full open permission. If Preview refuses, the PDF may restrict printing or copying — you still need the open password.
Browser: FileToolsHub unlock
Go to /tool/unlock-pdf, upload the PDF, enter the correct password, and download the unlocked file. Same upload-and-delete processing model as other PDF tools on the site. Use this when you do not have Acrobat installed or you are on a locked-down work laptop.
After editing, lock the file again with /tool/protect-pdf before you send it. The delivery steps are in /blog/protect-pdf-client-delivery-checklist.
“Owner” vs “user” passwords
Some PDFs have an open password (required to view) and permission flags (restrict copy or print). Unlocking for editing usually means you knew the open password. Permission-only locks without an open password behave differently in each app — if unlock fails, confirm which password the sender meant.
If you do not know the password
There is no legitimate universal crack. Contact whoever sent the file. For your own archive, search password managers and old email threads where you shared the password separately.
Workflow after unlock
Merge, split, or compress on the appropriate FileToolsHub PDF tools, then protect again before external send. Keeping one unlocked master offline and distributing locked copies reduces repeat unlock cycles.
FAQ
Is unlocking the same as cracking? No — you supply the correct password; the tool writes an unencrypted copy. Without the password, the tool cannot help.
Will unlocking remove watermarks? Visible watermarks are separate from encryption; unlocking only removes the open password layer.
Can I unlock on my phone? Mobile PDF apps vary; the browser tool works anywhere you can upload the file.
Is the unlocked file editable in Word? Not automatically — you still need /tool/pdf-to-word or manual editing for text changes.
