How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
Open iPhone photos on a PC by converting HEIC to JPG — using Windows Photos, Paint, or a free browser converter on FileToolsHub.
Windows does not always show HEIC files the way a Mac or iPhone does. To email a photo, upload it to a site, or open it in an older app, convert HEIC to JPG first. You can use built-in Windows apps when they cooperate, or upload to /tool/heic-to-jpg when you want a quick download without installing codecs.
Why Windows struggles with HEIC
HEIC is Apple’s default photo format on recent iPhones — smaller files than JPG at similar quality. Windows 10 and 11 can preview HEIC only if the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store are installed. Without them, Explorer may show a generic icon and some apps refuse to open the file at all.
If you transfer photos over USB or cloud sync and hit “unsupported format,” conversion is the fix — not renaming the extension.
Built-in option: Photos app
With HEIF extensions installed, double-click the HEIC in File Explorer so it opens in Photos. Use Save as or Export (wording varies by Windows version) and pick JPEG. If Save as is grayed out, the codec pack is missing or the file is corrupt — try the extension install below or skip to the browser tool.
Built-in option: Paint (Windows 11)
Right-click the HEIC → Open with → Paint. When Paint loads the image, File → Save as → JPEG picture. Paint depends on the same HEIF support as the rest of the system. One photo at a time is fine; batch folders are tedious in Paint.
Install HEIF support (optional)
In the Microsoft Store, search for HEIF Image Extensions and install. For some HEIC variants you also need HEVC Video Extensions (often a small fee for the official codec). After install, reboot once if previews still fail. Corporate PCs may block Store installs — that is when a browser converter is easier than fighting IT policy.
Convert in the browser with FileToolsHub
Open /tool/heic-to-jpg, upload one or more HEIC files, and download JPG copies. Processing is upload-backed for the job; files are removed after conversion. Typical per-file limit is about 25 MB — enough for phone camera rolls. No account required for everyday use.
Need PNG instead of JPG for a design tool? Convert HEIC to JPG here, then open /tool/convert-image-format and choose PNG.
Quality and metadata
JPG is lossy — re-saving many times adds artifacts. Convert once from the original HEIC and keep that JPG as your working copy. Location and camera metadata may strip or change depending on the converter; copy originals before converting if EXIF matters for your workflow.
Batch folders from an iPhone backup
For dozens of files, repeat upload on /tool/heic-to-jpg in sensible batches rather than fighting one-by-one Save as dialogs. On your phone, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible shoots JPG directly if you want to avoid HEIC on Windows entirely going forward.
FAQ
Will renaming .heic to .jpg work? No — the file is still HEIC inside. You must decode and re-encode to JPG.
Is HEIC better than JPG? Often smaller at the same visual quality, but JPG wins for compatibility on Windows and the web.
Does FileToolsHub store my photos? Files are processed for the conversion job and not kept as a gallery; treat sensitive images like any upload service and use local tools if policy requires it.
Can I convert back to HEIC? This guide is about getting JPG for Windows compatibility; reverse conversion is rarely needed for PC workflows.
