HTML to Markdown

A CMS export, a copied article, or an old email often arrives as HTML when you need Markdown for a repo or a notes app. HTML to Markdown rewrites the tags into that source.

Headings and code

Headings come out in the ATX style, with hash marks, not as underlined setext headings. Code blocks are fenced. Links and emphasis follow the usual Markdown spelling. Markdown to HTML is the opposite direction when you need tags again. If you only want to see the page, HTML Preview renders the markup. HTML Formatter only indents tags. Markdown Preview is for Markdown you already have.

What gets simplified

Turndown-style conversion keeps the readable content and drops a lot of layout. Nested tables, scripts, styles, and class-heavy divs will not survive as a perfect twin of the page. A navigation bar and a footer copied with the article will show up as extra lines unless you delete them first. Paste the article fragment, not the whole document, when you can. Inline styles are not a Markdown feature, so color and font choices disappear. That is usually what you want for a repo.

Check the links and the lists

Relative URLs stay as they were. A list that was built with manual line breaks instead of li tags may become a paragraph. Images become Markdown image syntax only when the tag is a normal img with a src. After you copy the result, open it in Markdown Preview if you need to see whether a heading level or a link target survived.
