About Decimal to Hours

Decimal to hours splits one number into whole hours and rounded minutes. The field opens at 2.5, and the line reads Time: 2h 30m.

Two and a half hours

Hours are the whole part of the number. Minutes are the fraction times 60, rounded to the nearest minute. If that rounding lands on 60, the hour increases by 1 and the minutes become 00. 2.5 is 2 hours and 30 minutes, shown as Time: 2h 30m. 2.99 is 2h 59m. 2.999 rounds the minutes to 60 and becomes 3h 00m. 0 is 0h 00m. A negative number throws Value cannot be negative. The field is labeled Decimal hours. The button reads Calculate. A blank decimal box throws Enter a valid number before the split. Minutes are always two digits. October 2026 is when this split was rechecked.

What the split does not track

There are no seconds. A fraction that is closer to the next minute jumps a full minute. 2.999 becoming 3h 00m is that jump, not a second field. There is no date and no clock time of day. The page does not add two shifts together. It does not convert the result back to decimal on the same form. Hours to Decimal is the reverse page, and it takes hours and minutes as two fields. This page takes one number. A result of 2h 30m is not a payroll rule. It is only the split of the number you typed. There is no rounding menu.

How to check 2h 30m

Leave 2.5 and press Calculate. The line should be Time: 2h 30m. Change the field to 2.99 and expect 2h 59m. Change it to 2.999 and expect 3h 00m. Change it to 0 and expect 0h 00m. Change it to -1 and expect Value cannot be negative. Clear the field and expect Enter a valid number. If you see two inputs, one for hours and one for minutes, you are on the reverse page. This form has a single field labeled Decimal hours. The button label is the word Calculate, with no noun after it. The minutes in the result should be two digits, including a leading zero when the minute count is under 10, and 00 when the rounding rolls the hour.
