How to Sign a PDF Without Printing

Add a signature to a PDF on screen — draw in Preview or Acrobat, or use FileToolsHub’s sign tool when you need a quick download.

Open Sign PDF →

Printing, signing, scanning, and emailing back is slow and blurs the scan. You can place a signature on a PDF digitally and send the same file the portal asked for. Built-in apps on Mac and paid Acrobat on Windows cover many cases; /tool/sign-pdf is a free browser option when you just need to draw and download.

What “sign without printing” means

You add an image of your signature (or a drawn stroke) on top of the PDF page, usually where a line says Sign here. That is not the same as a certified digital signature backed by a certificate authority, but it satisfies most rental forms, NDAs, and HR packets.

Mac: Preview

Open the PDF in Preview. Show Markup toolbar → Sign → create a signature with trackpad or camera. Click the signature, drag it onto the line, resize, File → Export as PDF. Send the exported file, not a screenshot.

Windows: Edge or Acrobat

Microsoft Edge can open PDFs and offers basic draw/markup on some builds — enough for a quick initial. For repeatable signatures, Acrobat’s Fill & Sign places stored signatures on multiple pages. Free Edge markup is fine once; frequent signers benefit from a saved signature image.

Browser: FileToolsHub sign PDF

Open /tool/sign-pdf, upload the PDF, draw your signature on the canvas, place it on the page, and download the signed PDF. Upload-backed processing like other PDF converters on the site. Pair with /tool/compress-pdf if the signed scan-heavy file is too large for email.

Use a clean signature image

Sign white paper, photograph or scan, crop tight, or draw once in the tool. Dark ink on white reads best when scaled small. Avoid shadows from phone photos if you paste an image.

Legal and process expectations

Some contracts require witnessed wet ink or a platform-specific e-sign product. A drawn signature on a PDF is widely accepted for everyday business, but read the instructions on the form. When in doubt, ask the sender.

After signing

Flatten if the recipient’s viewer moves markup layers oddly — /tool/flatten-pdf on FileToolsHub. Password-protect confidential signed copies with /tool/protect-pdf.

FAQ

Is a drawn signature legally binding? It depends on jurisdiction and document type; everyday agreements often accept it, high-stake deals may not.

Does sign-pdf add a certificate? No — it embeds your drawn signature as content on the page, not a PKI digital certificate.

Can I sign on iPhone? Preview-equivalent apps exist; or upload to /tool/sign-pdf from mobile Safari.

Will the signature copy to every page? You place it per page unless your app offers apply-to-all; repeat placement or use a desktop tool for multi-page initials.
