About XML Formatter

API responses, SOAP messages, and exported config files often arrive as one enormous line of XML. Paste it here to get properly indented, readable structure so you can find the element you're looking for.

Where you'll need it

Debugging SOAP and REST API responses, reviewing sitemap.xml and RSS feeds, reading Android layout and Maven or .NET config files, and inspecting data exports from older enterprise systems.

If formatting fails, the XML is probably invalid

A formatter needs well-formed XML. The usual culprits: a tag that's opened but never closed, an unescaped ampersand (write & instead of a bare &), tags whose capitalization doesn't match (XML is case-sensitive), or more than one root element. Run it through the XML Validator to see exactly where the error is.

Does formatting change my data?

Indentation only adds whitespace between elements. In most documents that's harmless, but where whitespace is meaningful — mixed text content, or elements marked xml:space="preserve" — keep the original for production and use the formatted version for reading.
