About Speaking Time Estimator

Speaking time estimator divides whitespace-separated words by 130 and keeps one decimal. Three words print about 0.0 minutes, and 130 words print about 1.0.

Three words print 0.0

The phrase one two three returns two lines. The first line is 3 words. The second line says about 0.0 min speaking and names 130 wpm. The minute figure is the word count divided by 130, printed with one decimal. Nothing raises that figure to 1. A short line can therefore read 0.0 even though words were counted. 130 copies of the word word return 130 words and about 1.0 minutes. 131 copies still print 1.0, because 131 divided by 130 is 1.007 and one decimal keeps 1.0. Spaces are the only split. The label is Process. A box of only spaces throws Input is required.

What 130 words a minute is not

This is not a reading estimate. The reading page divides by 200, rounds up, and refuses to go below 1 minute. This page divides by 130 and can print 0.0. It does not skip headings. A hyphenated pair with no space is one word. A number is a word. Punctuation stuck to a word stays inside that word. The rate is fixed. There is no slider and no second speed. The result is two lines of text and there is no download. Word Counter lists more totals than this pair of lines. If the second line says 200 wpm, that result came from the reading estimate.

How to check the tenth

Paste one two three and press Process. The first line should be 3 words. The second should say about 0.0 min speaking and mention 130 wpm. Paste 130 copies of one word and expect about 1.0. Add one more copy and the minute line should still say 1.0. Blank the box and expect Input is required. If the minute count is a whole number with no decimal, you are on the reading estimate. A comma glued to a word does not start a new word. The first line is the count. The second line is the speaking estimate.

The draft never leaves this tab

The count runs in this browser. The draft is not uploaded. Paste a script, press Process, and read the two lines. Closing the tab drops the draft. There is no history of earlier counts. Three words still say about 0.0, because this page has no one-minute floor. 130 words say about 1.0. 131 words still say about 1.0. The second line always names 130 wpm. A hyphenated pair with no space remains one word. A number remains a word. Process does not save a file. Copy the two lines if you need them after you leave. A single word still prints about 0.0, because 1 divided by 130 is under a tenth. The reading estimate would have said 1 minute for that same word.
