How to Remove Location Data from Photos
Strip GPS and other EXIF metadata before sharing—using Photos, ExifTool, or FileToolsHub’s strip-image-exif tool.
Smartphone photos often embed GPS coordinates, device model, and timestamps in EXIF metadata. Sharing the original JPEG to social media or clients can leak where you live or where a sensitive site visit occurred. Removing metadata before publish is a privacy habit separate from resizing the image. Use export options in Apple Photos, Windows Remove properties, ExifTool in scripts, or /tool/strip-image-exif when you want a quick browser pass. Volunteer photographers at events should strip GPS before uploading albums for parents; school names in backgrounds already reveal location without coordinates. Some printers embed serial numbers in EXIF on scanned documents—run strip on PDF sources if your scanner software adds metadata back on save. Cloud photo backups may re-sync stripped files if the phone still holds the original with GPS—delete or strip at source before sync runs. DNG and CR2 RAW from cameras include GPS even when JPEG previews look clean; export share copies explicitly. CRM attachments sometimes re-embed metadata when staff re-save exports from preview panes—strip at the edge before upload to the ticket. Wedding photographers deliver two galleries: full EXIF for the couple, stripped JPEGs for public blogs the couple shares widely. Slack and Discord recompress uploads but may retain embedded metadata on original uploads—strip before posting sensitive site photos to internal channels. TIFF scans from office copiers often include device serial tags worth removing on public filings. Insurance claim photos may require original metadata for fraud review—submit full EXIF to the adjuster portal but strip copies you post publicly while waiting on approval. Genealogy sites appreciate stripped portraits so living relatives locations stay private in shared trees.
What EXIF can reveal
GPS latitude and longitude pin a capture location. Serial numbers and lens data fingerprint gear. Timestamps show patterns of movement. Screenshots may carry less EXIF but can still include software tags—treat any shared binary as potentially informative.
iPhone and Mac Photos export
When sharing from Photos on iOS, use Share without location if offered, or export a duplicate via Mac Photos File → Export → Export Photo with location unchecked in metadata options (wording varies by macOS version). AirDrop originals to yourself before stripping if you need an archive copy with metadata intact at home.
Windows file properties
Right-click the image → Properties → Details → Remove Properties and Personal Information. Choose Create a copy with all possible properties removed for a safer upload file. Repeat for batches via PowerShell scripts that copy to an output folder.
ExifTool batch
Install ExifTool, then exiftool -all= on copies in a directory (test on duplicates first). Fine-grained tags can be removed selectively for GPS only. ExifTool runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux the same way—ideal for photographers with hundreds of exports.
Social platforms
Some networks strip GPS on upload; do not rely on that—policies change and DMs may send originals. Strip locally before upload when location sensitivity matters.
FileToolsHub strip-image-exif
Upload to /tool/strip-image-exif, download the cleaned file, and verify in your OS properties pane that GPS is gone. Pair with resize tools if you also need smaller bytes—not just fewer tags.
Keep a master archive
Store full-metadata originals in encrypted backup for your albums; publish stripped derivatives publicly. Document which folder is “share safe” for interns and contractors.
HEIC and RAW workflows
Convert to JPEG for sharing after strip when recipients need universal viewers. RAW files hold extensive metadata—export JPG for clients from Lightroom with location cleared in export presets.
Final checks
Messaging apps may send originals when users pick Document instead of compressed share—strip metadata on the file you attach, not only on Instagram uploads. Real estate listings sometimes embed geotag in interior shots taken with phone cameras; strip before publishing vacant homes to reduce stalking risk. Educate family members who repost your albums without re-exporting.
FAQ
Does PNG have EXIF? Sometimes XMP or tEXt chunks carry metadata—strip tools handle both when configured. Will stripping hurt image quality? Removing metadata does not recompress pixels; quality stays the same.
Can I add fake GPS instead? Misleading metadata is unethical and may violate platform rules—remove rather than spoof. Is browser stripping OK for legal evidence? Chain-of-custody workflows need forensic tools; use appropriate process for court photos.
